I believe in the campers’ code in that we have a responsibility to leave the world better than we found it. We all have strengths and abilities and it is incumbent upon us to use these strengths and abilities to help others. However, we also have finite resources, therefore, much of my service work must related to and benefit the work I do for my students.
I have always tried to serve my school community, my professional community – locally, provincially, and internationally – and the broader community for kids. Within my school community I regularly coach sports teams and sponsor some form of extra-curricular program for the arts. As a teacher, I would always serve on at least one site-based committee at our school; but as an administrator I try to avoid them in order to build teacher leadership capacity. I do serve on the Board of Directors of our Lake Trail Community Education Society, as the principal of our school.
There are several ways that I serve my local professional community. The most important way is through mentoring colleagues with their professional growth and development. I regularly serve on district committees, the most recent one being a steering committee for developing inquiry-based learning throughout our district. I have also served as the Contract Chair for our Principals and Vice-Principals Association for the past 13 years.
My work at the provincial and international level has been curtailed significantly in recent years as I have taken on increased responsibilities locally. However, the most significant and impactful work I have done at this level has been as a member of the Board of Directors for BC Original Minds Association which facilitates and funds the provincial program for Destination Imagination, a global non-profit dedicated to inspiring the next generation of innovators, leaders and creative problem solvers.
